Experience And Accomplishments
For me, this job is about helping as many people as I can. I will bring my experience to serve you in another term on City Council. Below is a list of initiatives and activities I have been most proud to have spearheaded or been involved with over the last two terms. There is always more work to do. I have learned from things that didn’t go as planned, and I will build on our successes.
Lobbied for funding and construction of various infrastructure and amenity projects, including:
- Calder Library
- Northwest Police Station and Training Centre
- Yellowhead Freeway Conversion (detailed design work this year, anticipate construction on St. Albert Trail to 97 Street section 2023–2027)
- Coronation Recreation Centre (final design complete this summer, anticipate construction 2021–2024)
Work has started on, and I will continue to push for:
- Northwest LRT line extension through Northwest Edmonton to St. Albert
- whistle cessation at CN Rail Crossing at 162 Avenue
- completion of Albany Park
Implemented playground and school zones.
Child Friendly Edmonton: Championed addition of child friendly elements to civic square redevelopment, free transit for children under 12, led work on identifying child friendly businesses, took children’s input on City Plan.
Worked with Traffic Safety to improve traffic calming for neighbourhoods, which led to the new Street Labs program, where communities can use quick, creative, inexpensive solutions to improve safety and livability.
Women’s Initiative: Ensuring women are engaged and have their voices heard on city issues.
Gender equity work: Championed Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) and its implementation on City policies; parental leave for Councillors; child care policy for City staff; engaging more women to seek work as transit operators and firefighters.
Gender-Based Violence Prevention: Initiated, started meeting with faith leaders to provide resources for education, prevention, and support.
Regional Elected Women: Started group to support each other.
Women and Money: Worked with communities, businesses, and financial experts to offer education to women about all aspects of financial literacy.
Represented Edmonton at Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) at United Cities and Local Government; spoke on housing, climate change, gender-based violence prevention and gender equity.
FCM Governance Rep for Ukraine, focusing on local economic development and gender equity work including increasing women’s participation in politics.
Championed Missing Middle Infill Design Competition to improve the designs of infill projects.
Chaired Blatchford Stakeholder Committee. It’s great to see people living there in new homes and neighbourhood amenities taking shape!
Held virtual events with Business Improvement Areas, ward-based non-profits, Alberta Women Entrepreneurs, Money Mentors, Edmonton Police, and Edmonton Transit.
Hosted an annual event in Grand Trunk Park for everyone in the ward with food, entertainment from a variety of cultural and musical groups, kids activities, and information booths from City and community partners. Always a wonderful opportunity to meet and engage with residents of all ages, and one of the things I missed doing most in 2020.
Hosted twice-yearly Community Leaders gathering, which included community leagues, non-profits, seniors associations, area council, business improvement areas, faith and cultural leaders. It was an opportunity to let folks know what is happening in the city and also to get feedback about challenges they are facing and exchange ideas within the ward.
Hosted Town Hall with Edmonton Police.
Attendance at various events including community league days, community league events or AGMs, cultural and faith events, non-profit fundraisers, and other community events.
Day-to-day constituent work: Assisting ward residents with various issues including potholes, alleys, neighbourhood renewal, waste collection, bus routes, safety concerns, infill challenges, rezoning, playgrounds, and more. This is the heart of the job!
