You have probably heard that alcohol consumption will soon be allowed at designated sites at several River Valley parks.
I was torn in my vote on this measure. Public engagement surveys leaned towards support, and I value that input. But I was concerned by the public health representatives who noted a lack of public health benefits as well as potential risks. And I have to admit my own bias. I have had family members killed by drunk drivers, and would never want another family to go through that if it could be avoided.
In the end, I was in the minority who voted against the measure. So the pilot program will run from May 28 to October 11. I hope people get out to our parks and enjoy Edmonton’s beautiful summer safely and responsibly. Please, please never drink and drive.
